Who We Are
More than two decades of engineering education and consulting experience are the foundation for Rakes Engineers and Consultants. Matt learned from his carpenter Father, the value of hard work, craftsmanship, and never leaving a job “good enough”. Experience in commercial and residential construction as an Interior Trim Carpenter demonstrated the real-world challenges that construction personnel often face when attempting to construct plans not fully coordinated with site and project constraints. Great mentors and educators in California and Colorado provided the technical aptitude that fueled a passion for designing HVAC and plumbing systems that fade into the background so the client and end-user can focus on what they do best: learn, grow, create, produce, and improve. Rakes Engineers and Consultants aim to accomplish several goals at once: energy efficient design, conservation of resources, professional integrity, a passionate workforce invested in design excellence and client satisfaction. We take the time to thoroughly survey, document, analyze, and engineer high-quality systems, processes, and environments.

Get to know our founder, Matt Rakes
Matt’s commitment to environmentally conscientious engineering design stems from his appreciation and respect of the forests, oceans, animals, and weather he regularly enjoys. Raised by a Carpenter Father and Registered Nurse Mother, hard work, mechanical aptitude, math, and science were early and often re-enforced principles. He studied mechanical engineering and graduated the University of Colorado at Denver in 2004. Matt was mentored in Civil Land Development and Transportation Engineering as a Design Technician at Perception Design Group, Inc.. During the Great Recession years, he transitioned to Mechanical HVAC and Plumbing Engineering while enjoying the extraordinary bio-diversity of San Diego, California. Learning to surf in the calmer breaks of Ocean Beach, he was fortunate to gain experience on projects ranging from Electrical/Cogeneration Turbines, environmental test chambers, Navy Aircraft Carrier air compressors, and N+1 Data Centers. In 2012, Matt returned to Colorado to be near family, snowboard in the fluffy, powdery, Rocky Mountains, and continue developing engineering skills in Tenant Improvement, Commercial Offices, K-12/Institutional, and Government projects.
